Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a cheap and an expensive cue?
A: The main differences are in the materials, construction, and technology. Cheap cues are often made with lower-grade wood, have simple glued-on tips, and can be mass-produced. Expensive cues use higher-quality woods (like maple and exotic hardwoods), feature inlays, have advanced ferrule and joint technology, and offer better balance and consistency, which improves your game over time.

What weight cue should I choose?
A: Most players use cues between 18 and 21 ounces. A good starting point is 19 or 20 ounces.

  • Lighter (18-19 oz): Offers more cue ball speed and “feel,” good for finesse shots.

  • Heavier (20-21 oz): Provides more power and can feel more stable for beginners.
We recommend trying a few different weights to see what feels most comfortable and natural in your hands.

What is a “low deflection” shaft, and do I need one?
A: A low deflection (LD) shaft is engineered to bend (or squirt) less when you use English (side spin). This means your aim is more accurate on off-center shots. They are a great upgrade for intermediate to advanced players looking to improve their consistency. Beginners can start with a standard shaft and upgrade later.

How often should I replace my cue tip?
A: It depends on how often you play. A casual player might need a new tip once a year, while a serious player may need one every few months. You should replace your tip when it becomes too hard, glazed over, flattened (mushroomed), or is visibly worn down. A good tip is crucial for controlling the cue ball.

Can I buy just a shaft for my cue?
A: Yes, but the shaft must have the correct pin type (the joint) to match your cue’s butt. Common joint types include 5/16×18, 3/8×10, and Radial. Please check your existing cue’s joint or contact us with the make and model, and we can help you find a compatible shaft.

What is the best cue for a beginner?
A: The best beginner cue is a well-made, straight, two-piece cue from a reputable brand. You don’t need to spend a fortune. Look for a cue in the $75 – $150 range that feels solid, has a good weight (19-20 oz), and comes with a quality leather tip. This will give you a reliable tool to learn and improve with.

How do I know if a cue is straight?
A: The best way is the “roll test.” Place the cue on a perfectly flat table (like a pool table) and gently roll it. Watch the seam between the butt and shaft. If it wobbles up and down as it rolls, the cue is not straight. All our cues are inspected for straightness before shipping.

How should I clean and maintain my cue?
A:

  • Shaft: Wipe it down with a slightly damp microfiber cloth after each use to remove chalk and oil. For a deeper clean, use a very fine abrasive cue cleaner or a specific cue conditioning paper.

  • Tip: Scuff it regularly with a tip tool to maintain texture and hold chalk.

  • General: Store your cue in a case to protect it from warping due to humidity and temperature changes. Never leave it leaning against a wall or in a hot car.
